RSS blog launched

As a new schoolyear, actually my last on Faculty of electrical engineering and comms (hopefully) starts, I decided to change the nature of the blog on my homepage. I switched over to XML-based RSS blog, because I think it can be updated more effectively. I'm gonna publish here info about or links to interesting stuff I come across while surfing the web, working for school, testing software and whatever else. Check back from time to time, I hope I'll have more time (or I'll be less lazy) to update more frequently.

Jaroslav Stun's Chess problems launched

Finally, after a few months of trying, my father got me to update his Chess homepage. The previous entirely Flash-based version was terribble to maintain (not to speak about it being a real pain in the ass for search engines), so I decided to remake it completely. I've launched the web a few days ago, now I'm impatiently waiting to see whether my new SEO attempts will make some difference for the site.

Jaro Stun's homepage planned updates

I'm currently planning to do some updating to my homepage as well. It's not gonna be so radical as by Jaroslav Stun's Chess problems, as it's gonna be more like some added functionality. I think I'll add a guestbook (just to have one, because everyone else has) and maybe some other stuff into FUN section (FUN is really important, isn't it ?!). Moreover, I'll add some new personal photos from the last holiday in Greece on the Thassos Island (I promise you some nice wallpapers ;-))

Homepage upgraded

I had some forced free time (as I had to sit on a college room for 2 days without internet), so I decided to give a radical facelift to my homepage. All page's design have been heavily updated, to give it a sleek, modern-looking design, which replaced generic Dreamweaver template I was using. As for the content, it's more-less the same, except that I added a few more images to portfolio and I added the guestbook, I always wanted :-).(I must correct one bug there, though.) HOwever, more updates are comming, especially to portfolio section. I hope I'll have time for it, as in 2 days new semester starts, and this will be one hell of a killer year.

Windows Vista RC1

I've been testing Windows Vista RC1 for a few days now. So far, so good, there are still some bugs and glitches to be repaired, but in the end, it's pretty stable OS, which can be used as a primary boot. In fact, I only boot to XP when I need to work with virtual CD-DVD drive, b'coz there's no virtual drive software that works with Vista. Also Nero-Burning ROM doesn't behave very well. I also have some weird issue with Start Menu shortcuts...they just stop working after some time... Other than this, Vista's running fine, performace is even better than XP. I also tried to play a few HW-hungry games(Half-Life 2, FEAR, Quake 4), and to my big surprise, even F.E.A.R runs better(and some surfaces, like water for instance even look better), than in XP. I guess DirectX 10 is more optimized...

I came across it by accident, and immediately knew I have to register ;-). All the polls, shoutboxes, counters and many more services are pretty much customizable, so they won't damage the visual style you've chosen for your website. Definitely, it's worth a try. Btw., you can vote in my poll on the homepage :D

Jaroslav Stun's Chess problems - SEO

Something less than a month since launch, these are my first SEO attempt results: Google, Yahoo (and Altavista): (keywords: Jaroslav Stun, Stun chess, Stun chess problems), page is 1st in the results, MSN (or Live! search),Lycos: (keywords: Jaroslav+Stun, Stun+chess), page ranks 1st as well. So far so good :-) I really think, that the key here is a good webpage title and web exposure - if you submit your site to web directories and most important, find your way into WikiPedia, as it is directly cooperating with Google.

Now you can watch 3 of my music videos (US. marines, Valiant and Sovereign), I created just for fun. They're (b'coz of bandwidth issues) however presented in reduced resolution - 2:1. If you like them, and want to see it in original resolution, contact me, and I'll send the requested videos to you.

XAML RSS Reader

During the weekend I decided to play with XAML markup for a while again, and as a preparation for the solution of my semestral project, I've created a blog reader, based entirely on XAML markup, as an excercise of databinding and data-driven UI creation. I hope, I'll be able to learn how to inter-connect XAML with MSSQL databases, it would make up for an interesting SP1 solution ;-) Meanwhile, if you're running Windows Vista, or you have .NET 3.0 (previously WinFX) installed, you can check out the new reader in my blog section.

"Professional" looking web effects ;-)

For a while, I've been wondering, how the blending and transition effects, that some webpages use have been achieved. Imagine my surprise, when I accidentally found out today, that it is as simple as using a single stupid tag. LOL You can't make it simplier than just inserting a specific META tag, defining the type of transition effect and it's duration in seconds. To find out, how this little trick works, follow the link from this article. However, as everything has it's minus side, this stuff won't work in Firefox (and possibly any other browsers). Some browsers just ignore the tag, but don't worry, it won't screw up your page.

Windows Experience Index

You can easily change the Windows Experience Index, and all the metrics collected from your system, just by editing a single XML file, located in your system directory: Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore\ The settings have just an informational character, so it won't affect your system or it's true performance. But if you want your Computer Performance Props window look cool, here you can do it. However, you can use only 1 digit decimal number, with 1 decimal position only, otherwise the number you specified won't be displayed. Click on the link, to see my PC's performance :-D

Updates ! DS9 cover collection in Portfolio.

Finally I had sometime, so I created a custom collection of CD-DVD slim covers for Star Trek: DS9. All covers are available in 2 variants (with station or wormhole). Each cover features different member of main cast. Moreover, this time the resource files from Corel Photo Paint 11 are made available as well, so if you can edit them, you can create your own versions o covers.
